In December 2025, Pure Maintenance Wisconsin was called to a 10,000 square foot home in East Troy, Wisconsin with a specific and meaningful goal: get the whole family together for Christmas. One occupant had the genetic profile that prevents proper mycotoxin processing — a condition his functional medicine doctor was actively treating — and the mold situation in the home was severe enough that he could not enter the building at all. The rest of the family was inside. He was not. The holiday reunion depended entirely on what we could accomplish.
What we found was one of the more complex mold environments we have encountered. A previous HVAC leak had saturated nearby framing and finished board, creating an established mold situation with direct access to the air systems. Multiple non-functioning April Air humidifiers on the furnaces had created persistent moisture buildup inside the HVAC units themselves, with a large area of visible black mold discovered inside one of the furnaces. The ductwork presented its own challenge — flexible plastic ducting combined with a complicated layout from multiple home additions over the years had allowed contamination to spread throughout the system. In the basement, a sauna had overflowed on several occasions, creating a separate water damage and mold situation. Pre-remediation spore trap sampling and visual inspection confirmed multiple distinct problem areas throughout the home.
Before our remediation work could begin, we recommended a series of preparatory steps: replacement of the old flexible ductwork, a thorough duct cleaning, HVAC system cleaning, and deactivation or replacement of all April Air units. Once that work was completed by the appropriate contractors, our team came in and performed a whole-home remediation in just two days with limited demolition. The patented vapor technology we use is particularly well suited to large, complex buildings — it penetrates the porous materials throughout the building envelope in a way that room-by-room conventional treatment cannot replicate at scale.
The remediation was a complete success. Every member of the family felt well for the entire holiday. The most mold-sensitive occupant — the one who had not been able to enter the home at all — experienced no mold symptoms whatsoever. The family was together. That was the goal.
